Chandelier Sizing Guide: The Formula for Perfect Proportions
Choosing the wrong chandelier size is one of the most common — and most visible — home décor mistakes. A fixture too small disappears into the ceiling; one too large dominates the room. The good news: there's a reliable formula, and it takes less than two minutes to apply.
The Basic Formula
The most trusted rule in the industry: add your room's length and width in feet — that sum is your ideal chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 × 10 ft room (22 ft combined) calls for a chandelier around 22 inches across, give or take 10% depending on your ceiling height and personal taste.
High ceilings (above 10 ft) scale up proportionally — a room that would normally take a 22" fixture can carry a 24–26" piece without feeling crowded. Low ceilings (below 9 ft) call for trimming down by about 10%.
Room-by-Room Sizing
Dining Room: Use the table formula, not the room formula. Your chandelier should be 10–12 inches narrower than the table's length. A 5 ft (60") table works best with a 50–60" chandelier — or scaled down to 40–48" for a less dramatic look.
Entryway & Foyer: In a two-story entry, size up and let the vertical space work for you. Use the standard L+W formula but lean toward the upper end of the range. Hang the fixture 7–9 ft from the floor so it reads clearly from the front door.
Bedroom & Living Room: The standard formula applies. Hang 7–8 ft from the floor, or at least 18 inches above the highest furniture it clears.
Kitchen: Over a kitchen island, treat the island like a dining table. For an open-plan kitchen, use the room formula but select the conservative (lower) end of the range for a lighter feel.
Height & Hanging Guidelines
- Dining: 60–66 inches above the table surface (measured to the bottom of the chandelier)
- Entryway / Foyer: 7–9 ft from the floor, with at least 7 ft clearance if the space is a walkway
- General rooms: 7–8 ft from the floor is the reliable standard
- Ceilings above 12 ft: Scale up proportionally; use an extended chain or rod to maintain proper visual weight at eye level
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Going too small. The most common error. A slightly large chandelier reads as a design choice; a small one reads as an afterthought. When in doubt, size up.
- Ignoring ceiling height. An 8 ft ceiling with a 36" chandelier at 7 ft feels crowded. Always verify the hanging height before purchasing.
- Using room size instead of table size for dining. The table formula produces better-proportioned results when there's a central table — use it.
- Forgetting the canopy diameter. The ceiling plate that covers your junction box should fit over your existing box. Confirm dimensions before ordering.
