Lighting Sizing Guide: Chandelier Size by Room & Lumens by Room Type
Quick answer: Add a room's length and width in feet; that sum in inches is the ideal chandelier diameter. Multiply room square footage by the lumens-per-square-foot target for that room type to get total ambient lumens. Hang the fixture bottom 30-34in above a table, or 7-8.5ft above the floor for open areas.
Chandelier diameter by room size
This is Hausgem's proprietary sizing reference, derived from the industry-standard length+width-in-feet formula and cross-checked against our own fitment data across chandelier SKUs.
| Room size (L x W, ft) | Length + width (ft) | Ideal chandelier diameter (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 x 10 | 20 | 20 |
| 12 x 12 | 24 | 24 |
| 12 x 14 | 26 | 26 |
| 14 x 16 | 30 | 30 |
| 16 x 18 | 34 | 34 |
| 18 x 20 | 38 | 38 |
| 20 x 22 | 42 | 42 |
Worked example: our Kayden Round Black Crystal LED Chandelier fits a 12x14 room (26in target diameter) as a proportional centerpiece.

| Room | Lumens per sq ft | 150 sq ft room total lumens |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | 20 | 3,000 |
| Bedroom | 15 | 2,250 |
| Dining room | 35 | 5,250 |
| Kitchen (general) | 35 | 5,250 |

| Home office | 60 | 9,000 |
| Hallway | 10 | 1,500 |
Ceiling height to fixture drop length
Rule of thumb: 2.5-3in of drop per foot of ceiling height. Over a dining table, the fixture bottom should sit 30-34in above the tabletop.
| Ceiling height (ft) | Drop length range (in) | Fixture bottom above floor (ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 20-24 | ~7 |
| 9 | 24-27 | ~7 |
| 10 | 27-30 | ~7.5 |
| 12 | 32-36 | ~8 |
| 14 | 36-42 | ~8.5 |
Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier for a 12x14 room?
Add the room's length and width in feet (12 + 14 = 26) to get 26 inches as the ideal chandelier diameter.
How many lumens does a living room need?
Living rooms need about 20 lumens per square foot of ambient light. A 150 sq ft living room needs roughly 3,000 total lumens, layered across ambient, task, and accent fixtures.
How low should a chandelier hang over a dining table?
The fixture bottom should sit 30-34 inches above the tabletop, which typically works out to 2.5-3 inches of drop per foot of ceiling height.
